Marcellus Matters: Investigating the Human/Societal Impacts and Environmental Issues Related to Development of the Marcellus Shale
3 – 4 p.m., Friday, March 26
16 Ritenour
Presenters: Michael Arthur (Geosciences) and Thomas Murphy (Cooperative Extension), co-directors, Marcellus Center for Outreach and Research
Development of the natural gas reserves of the Marcellus Shale will transform many of Pennsylvania’s rural communities with opportunities for economic development and with increasing demand for housing, workers and government and public services. Development also will affect Pennsylvania’s natural resources including forests, wildlife and watersheds. The Marcellus Center for Outreach and Research is a resource for Penn State researchers interested in examining those issues.
The aim of this informational meeting is to:
- Foster discussion of potential research collaborations to address human/societal impacts and environmental issues*
- Describe the seed grant program to facilitate cross-college research collaborations on those issues (this program is sponsored by the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) and Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment (PSIEE));
- Discuss future activities to advance research collaborations involving the Marcellus Shale.
*NOTE: The session will conclude with 15-20 minutes for networking among attendees to discuss possible collaborative research projects.
