2011 Marcellus Shale Multi-State Academic Applied Research Conference
About 100 academic researchers from a dozen colleges and universities examined the impacts and implications of Marcellus Shale development at the Marcellus Shale Multi-State Academic Applied Research Conference (May 10-11, 2011) in Altoona, Pa.
Conference organizers from Cornell University, Penn State University and the University of West Virginia sought to identify on-going research activities as well as determine new research needs related to the impacts of Marcellus Shale development in the two-day event. Building multi-institutional academic partnerships focused on Marcellus Shale was also a conference goal. Both academic researchers and Extension educators attended.
Discussions centered around five themes related to Marcellus development: economic implications, geology/technical/environmental issues, water resource management, local government/public policy/health, and social implications.
Among the institutions represented were Binghamton University, Carnegie Mellon University, Cornell University, Hobart & William Smith Colleges, Lock Haven University, Penn State, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Rutgers University, University of Pittsburgh, University of West Virginia and Wilkes University. Sponsors included the Marcellus Center for Outreach and Research, Northeast Regional Center for Rural Development and Ben Franklin Technology/Central and Northern Pennsylvania.
